Studio Shoot vs AI Product Photography: An Honest Cost Comparison

Both options produce good catalogs. They fail in different places, and the honest answer for most small brands is a mix.

What a studio day actually costs

Beyond the day rate you are paying for: studio or location rental, a photographer, an assistant on larger shoots, garment steaming and preparation, retouching per image, and your own time coordinating it. The output is usually a set number of items per day — and a ghost mannequin composite takes longer per item than a flat-lay. Reshoots for a colour variant or a restyled collar mean starting the process again.

You pay per generated image or per session, with no minimum booking. Your input cost is a phone photo taken well. The throughput is very different: you can produce a full catalog's worth of sessions in an evening. The tradeoff is that generation works from what you give it — a back view needs a real back reference, a fabric texture needs a clear macro, and an exotic material needs a good photograph to be read correctly.

Where the studio wins

  • Campaign imagery with a specific creative direction and unusual lighting.
  • Complex materials where physical light behaviour is the selling point: sequins, iridescent fabric, high-gloss patent, jewellery.
  • Anything involving people, motion or environment shot for real.
  • Where AI wins

    • Catalog consistency at scale. Hundreds of items in the same background, light and framing.
    • Speed for new arrivals and restocks, without booking anything.
    • Colour and background variants of an item already shot once.
    • Low fixed cost, which matters most when you are still testing which products sell.
    • The combination most brands land on

Shoot campaigns and hero imagery properly, a few times a year. Generate every catalog session in-house, continuously. That way the brand still has photography with a point of view, while the day-to-day work of adding products stops being a bottleneck.

      How to decide this month

List your next twenty products. For each one, ask whether a shopper's decision depends on how light behaves on the material. If the answer is no — which it is for most cotton, denim, knitwear and basics — generate it. Spend the studio budget on the handful where it genuinely changes the sale.
